Ransomes is a brand within the Ransomes Jacobsen family, which is a subsidiary of Textron. The company’s history stretches clear back to 1789, when Robert Ransome used 200 British pounds to open an iron foundry in Ipswich, England. In 1832, the company, known as J. R. and A. Ransome invented and patented the first lawn mower, the Buddings Patent. Other notable firsts include the first steam plough in 1856, the first gas-powered lawn mower in 1902, and the first battery-powered electric truck in Britain in 1920. Ransomes was purchased by Jacobsen in 1998, and continues to make turf equipment and other products to this day.
