    About John Deere

John Deere, a blacksmith working in Grand Detour, Illinois, began manufacturing farm equipment after creating the first commercially successful self-scouring steel plough in 1837, which was better suited to Midwestern soil conditions than the cast-iron ploughs that were commonly used at the time. The company expanded to other agricultural equipment, including its first tractor in 1918 and its first combine in 1927 and established itself as a leading brand in the industry.

    Expanding Into New Areas

The post-war boom years of the mid-20th century saw the rise of suburbs and ownership of houses and with it, lawn care. The sale of lawnmowers took off as homeowners looked to maintain pristine surfaces. John Deere entered the lawn care market in 1963 with the introduction of its first lawn tractor, the model 110. The tractor had a four-stroke, 7-horsepower gas engine. The product range expanded to include rear engine and diesel engine riding mowers in the 1970s and its first electric lawn tractor, powered by three car batteries, in 1972. Deere entered the professional golf and turf equipment market in the U.S. in 1987.

In 1991, John Deere acquired German lawn equipment manufacturer Sabo and its Dutch brand Roberine. The Gummersbach, Germany, facility was integral to the development of Deere’s Tango E5 autonomous mower in 2011. Deere sold Sabo in 2020. The company established the turf business as a separate division in 1994. Today Deere offers a large variety of turf equipment, including walk-behind and riding mowers, trap and bunker rakes, sprayers, spreaders, aerators, dethatchers, blowers, sweepers, and more.

    Current Offerings

The 7500A is a popular model of fairway mower. Its TechControl display allows operators to slow down the machine during turns while mowing to reduce turf scuffing. The AutoPedal feature allows the engine to run only as fast as needed given cutting conditions, reducing both engine noise and fuel consumption. Spiral and grooved roller options reduce the number of times grass is rolled in overlap areas of cutting units.
