    About Towable Wood Chippers

    Vermeer BC1000XL Towable Wood Chipper

Towable wood chippers are machines designed to cut and shred tree branches, limbs, and reasonable-sized trunks into mulch or wood chips. In order to move between jobsites, these machines are often built onto a single-axle chassis with a hitch for pulling behind a truck, tractor, or other vehicle.

    Towable Wood Chipper Features

Common features include a large, wide chute where the operator inserts the raw tree parts, located on the top or side of the machine, and a smaller chute or conveyor belt that dispenses the mulched material. These machines are typically powered by diesel engines, come in a variety of sizes and capabilities, and can be found everywhere from small landscaping operations to massive lumber-processing mills. Self-propelled wood chippers, by contrast, are machines mounted on a truck or crawler chassis that are designed to cut and shred trees and brush.

    Types Of Towable Wood Chippers

Towable wood chippers tend to be ideally suited for smaller jobs like landscaping or storm cleanup. Most feature a trailer chassis and hitch that lets the operator tow the machine. Stationary wood chippers can be mounted to any relatively flat surface or installed in the bed of a pickup or flatbed truck. Chipper attachments also sometimes fall into this category; they rely on the drive shaft of a tractor, for instance, to operate. The larger units tend to be fixtures at industrial lumber mills, mounted to platforms in an area dedicated to processing wood chips. Some large chippers include a crane component for lifting pieces of wood into the machine’s input hopper.
