Read More (About Top-dressers & Spreaders)Top-dressers and spreaders are important turf maintenance tools used on golf courses to apply top-dressing materials, such as sand or organic matter, that can speed up turf recovery, increase the firmness of greens, and generally improve playing conditions. Top-dressing is also used to encourage moisture retention during the summer, to protect newly planted grass from the elements, and as a follow-up to aeration. Grounds crews use spreaders to apply fertilizer and other dry materials, as well, to promote grass growth after seeding or overseeding. These machines are also sometimes used in the winter to apply salt for de-icing.
Material application amounts are an important consideration when top-dressing, as is uniform application. The Lawn Institute, for example, recommends not applying a layer any thicker than a quarter of an inch. If applying top-dressing materials or fertilizer to a fairway, you may want to choose a pull-type or mounted spreader coupled with a tractor, UTV, or other vehicle to cover a larger area on each pass. For greens, tee boxes, and other smaller surfaces, a push spin spreader (broadcaster) or walk-behind top-dresser (some of which are self-propelled) may offer better accuracy.
Bauman Manufacturing offers a wide range of drop spreaders, including the Model 220 push style with a capacity of 2 cubic feet (57 liters) and a spreading width of 20 inches (51 centimeters). They also manufacture several towable and hydraulic or PTO-driven mounted units with capacities ranging from 3 to 15 ft3 (85 to 425 L) and spreading widths ranging from 20 to 60 in (51 to 152 cm).
Toro is another prominent top-dresser and spreader manufacturer; the company produces drop, broadcast, and material-handler models including the Topdresser 1800 and 2500, the ProPass 200 Series, and MH-400 Series pull-type and mounted units. Hopper capacities range from 18 to 108 ft3 (510 to 3,058 L) and application widths range from 5 to 40 ft (1.5 to 12 m). The MH-400 stands out because in addition to the standard wired controller, there is also an option for a wireless remote system that lets you adjust spreading width and other settings on the fly and store preferred settings for future use.
