About Salsco
Sal Rizzo founded Salsco in 1979. Today, the Cheshire, Connecticut, company manufactures gas and electric greens rollers in use on top-rated golf courses and at country clubs around the world. In addition to the golf course maintenance industry, Salsco designs and manufactures products for the commercial turf and lawn care, rental, agriculture, construction, tree care, wood processing, and nursery industries. In addition to greens, tees, approaches, and fairways rollers, Salsco offers track and mini pavers, pavement routers, side dump buckets, engine- and PTO-driven wood chippers, combination chipper-shredder-vacuums, sawdust-producing machines, shaving mills, shaving processing equipment, knife grinders, bale wrappers and grabbers, and more.
Salsco HP11 Greens Roller
History
One of Salsco’s earliest products was the Salsco Lawn Maker. The four-wheel-drive articulating and oscillating seeder spread grass seed and dry and wet fertilizer at 60,000 square feet (5,574 square meters) per hour and handled simultaneous roll and spike tasks. After releasing the Vertical Free-Floating Tine Core Aerator in 1983, which Salsco claims was the lawn care industry’s first model, the company released the All-Purpose Aerator, a vehicle-towable machine for greens, fairways, and sports fields. Later, Salsco released slicer seeders, drop spreaders, leaf vacuums, dethatchers, asphalt pavers, walk-behind blowers, utility vehicles, and nursery and plant transport vehicles. Today, the company markets more than 40 products that are distributed globally.
Inspiration Strikes
Rizzo was reportedly inspired to develop a greens roller in the 1990s while attending an industry golf show. According to Salsco, rollers that golf courses were importing from overseas to smooth greens produced compaction and unhealthy grass issues. After sketching plans for a new roller on napkins while on a plane trip home, Rizzo and Salsco developed a Greens Roller prototype roughly a week later. The company’s gas and electric greens rollers now include the 09065, 09067, 09074, HP11, HP11-III, and HP5.5 models with trailer transport and the Tranz-Former EHA 5-G, Roll-N-Go, EHA Roller, and Greens/Approaches/Fairways and Sports Fields Roller self-transporting models.
Available options include a rotary brush, light kit, brush kit, arm rest seat, tournament roll kit, spike air kit, and sun cover. Salsco also sells 24-inch (61-centimeter) and 36-inch (91-centimeter) walk-behind greens rollers, as well as tailgate- and bumper-mount leaf vacuums, swing-away bumper-mount vacuums, leaf vacuums, and skid-mounted or trailer Strawblower blowers.
