    About Mini Excavators

Mini (or “compact”) excavators have operating weights of up to 12,000 pounds (5,443 kilograms) and in most cases are equipped with tracks. They may have rollover protection systems (ROPS) or fully enclosed cabs, and some of the latter have air conditioning and heating for comfortable year-round operation. They rely on hydraulics to power the swing arm and to rotate the cab a full 360 degrees on top of the undercarriage (wheels or tracks).

    Bobcat E35 Mini Excavator

Mini excavators perform much of the same work as larger wheel and crawler excavators, including digging and moving soil, gravel, sand, and other materials, but because of their compact nature, they are better-suited for small- and medium-sized jobs. Their smaller size (many measure less than 36 inches, or 91.4 centimeters, wide), also means they can operate in tight spaces that aren’t accessible to bigger machines.

In addition to digging, mini excavators can perform jobs like crushing, demolishing, lifting, trenching, loading, ripping, and much more, using various attachments. Examples include augers, concrete breakers, drills, hammers, crusher buckets, drum cutters, forestry mulchers, string trimmers, grapples, plate compactors, and post drivers, among others. They are also typically equipped with backhoe blades for performing similar work to a dozer, such as grading. This versatility makes mini excavators equally at home on mining and logging sites as they are on traditional construction sites.

    Examples Of Mini Excavator Models

One of the most popular mini excavator models on NeedTurfEquipment.com is the Bobcat E35. This 7,699-lb (3,492-kg) machine features a 24.8-horsepower (18.5-kilowatt) Tier 4 Final engine and is 69 in. (1,753 mm) wide. Also available in long- and extendable-arm configurations, the standard E35 has a rated lift capacity of 3,232 lbs (1,466 kg), a maximum dig depth of 10.2 ft (3.11 meters), a max dump height of 11 ft (3.35 m), a max reach of 17.2 ft (5.24 m) at ground level, and a bucket digging force of 6,968 pounds-force (31 kilonewtons). Another popular Bobcat model is the E20, which only weighs 4,306 lbs (1,953 kg) and has an undercarriage that can retract from 54 to 39 in. (1,372 to 991 mm).

Caterpillar’s 305E2 CR is another popular mini; this 11,443-lb (5,190-kg) machine has a 40.2-HP (30-kW) Tier 4 Final engine and is also available in a slightly larger 305.5 configuration. Other common mini excavators include the Kubota KX040 and the Takeuchi TB216. The hybrid Takeuchi TB216H is equipped both with a Yanmar 14.9-HP (11-kW) diesel engine for regular outdoor use and a 10.6-kW (14.2-HP) electric motor that allows for quiet, emissions-free indoor use.
