    About 3/4-Ton Pickup Trucks

The first pickups were created in 1913 when the Galion Allsteel Body Company of Galion, Ohio, began to do aftermarket conversions of Ford Model Ts to include hauling boxes. Today, pickups make up approximately 20% of all vehicles sold in the United States.

Pickup trucks are often categorized by their payload and towing capacities, such as 1/2-ton, 3/4-ton, and 1-ton. These designations, which were once directly tied to the difference between a truck’s weight and its gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), are today used more as general descriptors to help consumers differentiate between trucks’ capabilities. In a way, you can think of 1/2-ton, 3/4-ton, and 1-ton pickups as good, better, and best with regard to payload and towing capacity.

    Ford F-250 Lariat Super Duty

As such, people who need to haul bigger payloads or who routinely need to tow trailered loads of supplies, equipment, materials, or vehicles to landscaping, golf course, and other jobsites often favor heavy-duty 3/4-ton trucks over 1/2-ton models.

    Features & Configurations

Because they are designed primarily as work trucks, 3/4-ton pickups often come with many of the features contractors and other professionals need to haul heavy loads, including fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitches and trailer brake and taillight connections. You’ll also frequently find them equipped with vertical trailering mirrors, factory bed liners, trailer-assist features, and bigger gas or diesel engines that generate lots of torque.

One popular 3/4-ton pickup, the Ford F-250 Super Duty, is available in six trim levels: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited. The F-250 XL comes standard with a 6.8-liter V8 gasoline engine, and Ford offers a 7.3-L gas V8, a 6.7-L Power Stroke V8 Turbo Diesel, or a 6.7-L High-Output Power Stroke V8 Turbo Diesel engine as options. A TorqShift Ten-Speed automatic transmission with selectable drive modes translates power to the road. The truck’s relatively spartan interior nonetheless offers a few convenience and comfort options, including Ford’s Sync 4 infotainment system, with an 8-inch touchscreen that provides wireless phone connection, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and more. By way of comparison, Ford’s top-of-the-line F-250 Limited comes standard with the 6.7-L High-Output Power Stroke turbodiesel, heated and ventilated leather seats, a 12-inch touchscreen audio and phone system, and more.

A prominent competitor of the F-250 Super Duty is Chevrolet’s Silverado 2500 HD, which similarly comes in a wide range of available configurations. You can spec a 2500 with a Regular, Double, or Crew cab, and pair that with a Standard or Long bed. Available trim levels include Work Truck, Custom, LT, LTZ, and the flagship High Country package, which includes such amenities as 20-inch chrome wheels, a powered tailgate, a bed cam and Chevy’s HD Surround Vision package, heated leather seats and wood trim, and a slew of safety features such as a rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking assist, and the Safety Alert Seat, which provides vibration pulses on the left or right to indicate the direction of possible hazards, or on both sides for potential hazards in front of or to the rear of the truck when moving forward or in reverse, respectively. The High Country comes with either a 6.6-L gas V8 or a 6.6-L Duramax Turbo-Diesel V8; both engines are paired with an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission.
