Excavators range from mini excavators that have operating weights of less than 1 ton (0.9 metric tons) to massive diggers built for use in mines and quarries that can weigh more than 1,000 t (907 mt). Most excavators are crawlers, meaning they are equipped with tracks that give them greater stability and help them get around on jobsites with soft or rough terrain, but you can also buy wheeled excavators that you can drive on the road and that move more quickly around the jobsite. Wheel excavators typically provide greater mobility and maneuverability.
Special-application excavators include long-reach dredgers, dragline models with a boom and a bucket, and scrap handlers with elevating cabs that provide better visibility. Demolition crawler machines may come with high-reach arms, protective debris guards, shielded cabs, and filtered ventilation systems for the operator.
