Founded in 1914, Toro has established itself among the top brands in the turf management industry. Toro offers a range of high-quality turf mowers, lawn mowers, skid steers, and other products suitable for homeowners, landscapers, turf managers, and agricultural professionals. Toro’s continued reputation of durability, high performance, and commitment to sustainability leads the pack in providing environment-friendly innovations.

Customer-centric care drives Toro’s approach to product design, durability, safety, and environmental stewardship. From its earliest years, Toro’s innovations tackle its customers' toughest challenges. In today’s market, Toro works with researchers and agronomists to develop alternative power sources and efficient technology.

    Toro’s Early Years

Many know Toro for its vast array of lawn care products. However, the brand got its start developing tractor parts for The Bull Tractor Company. When The Bull Tractor Company closed, Toro began producing heavy-duty tractor engines and parts for merchant marine ships.

Toro co-founder John Samuel Clapper became president of the company shortly after its founding. During his tenure, Clapper took an active hand in the company’s product design, patenting 16 designs. Four years after its founding, Toro rolled out its first golf course product, a powered fairway roller. As the 1920s roared into history, Toro focused more on turf equipment. In 1923, Toro introduced the Sea Serpent fairway sprinkler system, and in 1924, Toro launched its first power mower.

    Innovations Through Time

Following its success and growth in the 1920s, Toro continued to lead the charge providing better tools for groundskeepers. In 1940, Toro launched the 76 Professional, a 76-inch (1.9-meter) power mower with hinged reels which hugged the course's hills. The 76 Professional remained for sale until the mid-1970s when Toro introduced the all-hydraulic Groundsmaster Series, which is still around today.

Toro likely wouldn’t be where it is today without investing in research and development. Agronomist James R. Watson, who joined the team in 1952, led a team studying turf care, invasive grasses, and pest control. In 1998, Toro created the Center for Advanced Turf Technology, now the Center for Technology, Research and Innovation (CRTI), to develop creative solutions for customer problems and design sustainable turf technology.

Over the last two decades, Toro has carried on its tradition of developing industry-leading products. Modern turf equipment is faster and more capable than machines of the past. For example, Toro released the Groundsmaster 5900 series in 2008, with rotary mowers that could mow an entire acre (0.4 hectare) in less than 5 minutes.

    Current & Future Sustainability Initiatives

Toro continues to lead the industry by focusing on labor scarcity, resource optimization, environmental stewardship, and technology development. Toro's products allow consumers to achieve their operational goals while furthering sustainability efforts.

Toro has introduced a range of electric and hybrid equipment that prioritize sustainability without compromising power and precision. These energy-efficient products address increasing global environmental risks. Toro also reduces engine emissions and optimizes power use in its products through proprietary battery systems, smart software, and electronic fuel injection. Electric-powered designs, such as the eDingo 500 compact utility loader, handle tough jobs while minimizing engine emissions and noise pollution.

Water scarcity is a growing concern for the agriculture and turf care industries. Toro provides solutions to enhance water conservation and efficiency. Technologies like the Aqua-Traxx Azul drip tape and the Tempus Series Controller have won awards for their water-saving capabilities. Toro also offers products that collect and analyze data to support water-conscious decisions, including precision spray nozzles, the Lynx Central Control System, and the Turf Guard Wireless Soil Monitoring System.

Toro works with its suppliers to develop solutions that maximize efficiency and eliminate unnecessary landfill waste. The company also minimizes waste associated with product packaging by using sustainable materials, reducing plastics, and employing on-product digital labels.

    Finding Sustainable Equipment

Toro's commitment to sustainability extends across its products, operations, and partnerships. This commitment reflects its dedication to reducing environmental impact and promoting responsible practices within the industry.
